GIGAQUIT RUM PRODUCERS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS
PREPARED MEDIUM TERM PLAN FOR INDUSTRY SECTOR DEVELOPMENT
The local nipa rum industry particularly in the municipality of Gigaquit sets its development direction as local producers and other stakeholders prepare its medium term plan during the Stakeholders and Strategic Planning Workshop held on November 5, 2004 at the Gigaquit Multi-Purpose Center. The activity was attended by some officers and members of the Gigaquit Agra Multi-Purpose Cooperative and officials and representatives of the local government, national line agencies such as the Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment and Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
During the workshop, the group sets its vision for the local nipa rum industry which is one of the source of income of over five hundred persons including nipa sap gatherers, wine processors and traders. They hoped that by the year 2009, Gigaquit Rum shall have improved product quality with established identity more competitive to domestic and foreign market-thereby improving the quality of life of the people in the community.
Various programs and projects were being laid that will be implemented in the next five years by various institutions primarily the beneficiary cooperative - GIAMUPCO. Their priotiy project is the establishment of a new processing plant that can produced quality rum out of nipa sap. Government agencies like DOST, DOLE, DAR, DENR and the local government units vowed to support the development of the industry by extended financial, technical and other support services.
