The province has a total land area of 273,902 hectares, roughly 9.67 % of the total land area of Northern Mindanao, which boast of lush virgin forests, a long stretch of sugar-fine beaches with world-class diving and surfing sites,  magnificent land formations and abundant marine life.

Fishing and mining are the predominant occupations in the area.  The province has the biggest deposits of nickel, gold, chromite, sand and gravel, limestone and silica.  Significant volume of clay and an undetermined quantity of semi-precious stones found in various areas are ideal for ceramics and gemstone processing industries.

The rich and fertile land predominantly produces agricultural crops such as rice, coconut and rootcrops.  Livestock and poultry-raising is also a main source of livelihood.
